Carotid Duplex Scan

What to Expect During the Procedure

A carotid ultrasound examination of the body’s two carotid arteries, located on each side of the neck, provides pictures of these blood vessels and information about the blood flowing through them as they carry blood from the heart to the brain. The exam will be performed by a sonographer, a technologist who is specially trained in ultrasound. A small hand held device called a transducer will be passed over the surface of your neck producing a sensation of light pressure on your skin.

A Doppler ultrasound study will also be a part of the carotid ultrasound examination. Doppler ultrasound evaluates the speed and direction of blood as it flows through the carotid arteries.

How Should I Prepare?

You should wear a loose fitting two-piece outfit to your ultrasound exam. You may be asked to wear a gown during the procedure. No other preparation is required.

What to Expect After the Procedure

When the exam is complete, you will be shown back to your dressing room to get dressed. A radiologist will analyze the images taken by the sonographer. A report will be dictated and sent to your referring physician, who will share the results with you.
