Pediatric Imaging: What Parents Should Know
We understand that medical imaging can feel overwhelming for both children and parents. Our team is experienced in caring for pediatric patients and will do everything possible to help your child feel safe, comfortable, and supported throughout their visit.
- Comfort items: Your child is welcome to bring a favorite blanket, stuffed animal, or toy for comfort. Please note that items containing metal may not be permitted during certain exams, such as MRI.
- Parents and Guardians: A parent or legal guardian may accompany a child during most imaging exams. In some situations, such as an MRI, procedures requiring anesthesia, or certain interventional procedures, additional safety restrictions may apply.
- Children Accompanying Patients: Children accompanying patients are not permitted in exam rooms or other clinical areas. Children under age 12 must remain supervised by a responsible adult in the waiting area at all times. If your child is the patient, please avoid brining siblings to the appointment whenever possible.
Common Imaging Tests
- X-ray- A quick and painless exam that creates images of bones and certain internal structures. Your child may be asked to hold still for a few seconds while images are taken.
- CT (Computed Tomography): A CT scan uses X-rays and advanced computer technology to create detailed images of the inside of your body. The scanner is shaped like a large ring. Some children may receive contrast material by mouth or IV to improve image quality.
- Fluoroscopy- Fluoroscopy uses real-time X-ray imaging to observe organs and body functions in motion. Preparation requirements vary depending on the exam and may include fasting.
- Ultrasound- Ultrasound uses sound waves to create images and does not involve radiation. A technologist applies warm gel to the skin and moves a small handheld devise over the area being examined. Some studies may require fasting or drinking fluids beforehand.
- MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging)– MRI uses magnets and radio waves to produce highly detailed images without radiation exposure.
- Orthopedic Injections – These minimally invasive procedures may be performed to help relieve pain or prepare a joint for additional imaging.
- Nuclear Medicine – Nuclear medicine exams use a small amount of radioactive material to evaluate how organs and tissue function. Radiation exposure is very low.
- PET/CT Scan- A Pet/CT scan combines nuclear medicine and CT imaging to provide information about both body structure and function. The exam typically includes a waiting period to allow the imaging tracer to be absorbed before the scan begins.
Your exam will be reviewed by one of our board-certified radiologists, who will interpret the images and prepare a detailed report. Once completed, the report will be sent to your referring physician.
You can access your report through the online patient portal as soon as it is available. If you have questions about your results, please contact your referring physician.
